Topolovgrad is regarded as the capital of Sakar, as it is the only town located within the mountain range. It lies 25 km from Elhovo and 90 km from Haskovo. The municipality covers 712 km², one-third of which is forest. The area is home to rare bird species, including the iconic Eastern Imperial Eagle.
A paradise for lovers of history and archaeology, it boasts an exceptional concentration of ancient monuments. Megalithic structures are scattered throughout the region, particularly around the villages of Sakartsi and Hlyabovo. The museum in Topolovgrad showcases the ethnography and cultural heritage of the region. Ustrem Monastery preserves the area's spiritual traditions, while the community centres in Ustrem, Srem, Radovets and other villages keep local folklore and intangible cultural heritage alive.
