General guidelines:
A circular hiking route with the starting and finishing point at Zaara Estate. Ideal for a half-day walk in nature or for getting some exercise during the short winter days when the weather is pleasant and you want to breathe some fresh air.
Description:
The route first heads south along a dirt road that skirts the forest from the south-southwest. After 1.2 km, you will reach the gate to the former Balzena fortress, after which you will also notice the remains of its structures.
Accents
Make sure you have enough water, especially during the warm season. There are no springs along the route.
You should be in good physical condition and wear suitable footwear. When going out into nature, it is always a good idea to carry a backpack with light food and water, a hat and a small first-aid kit.
As a general rule for all routes in Southeastern Bulgaria, if there is an electric fence across the trail, there will be a gate left open for passage. Look for it and do not forget to close it behind you. Animals in this area are often kept outdoors, and the electric fence keeps them safe.
