Dositeevo village

Destination Harmanli

Dositeevo is located 12 km from Harmanli, on the south-western slopes of the Sakar Mountains, in the Maritsa River valley, west of the Bakarliya area. Its former name was Syuli Kyoy, and it became part of Bulgaria after 1885. The surrounding area contains numerous remains from the Thracian and Roman periods, the most prominent being the remains of the Semercheto Thracian sanctuary.

Today, Dositeevo has around 300 residents. The village is named after Archimandrite Dositey, a prominent supporter of the Bulgarian national revival. The local community centre, Archimandrite Dositey–1908, preserves the area's cultural and culinary traditions. Traditional local dishes include kartalatsi (a traditional pastry) and tarator without yoghurt. The village festival takes place on 1 May.

One kilometre north of the village lies Dositeevo Reservoir, formed by the Balachka River, a tributary of the Maritsa. It is a pleasant place for relaxation, walking and birdwatching. The village church, St Ivan Rilski, was built in 1836. It still preserves its oldest icon, dating from 1878.
