Vishegrad Peak

The Highest Peak in Sakar Mountain – 856 m

Vishegrad is the highest point in Sakar Mountain – the only peak above 800 metres. It is an imposing massif with steep slopes covered almost entirely with vegetation. At the summit itself, however, there is an active military facility and access is prohibited. The suggested route skirts the summit from the southwest and reaches the remains of a Byzantine fortress.

Vishegrad may not impress with its height, but the wild nature surrounding it certainly does. Depending on the season, birds you may spot in the area include imperial eagle, honey buzzard, black and white stork, lesser kestrel and common kestrel, European bee-eater, three woodpecker species, golden oriole and many others.

In the warm season, you are also very likely to encounter tortoises, lizards and hedgehogs along the way. Enjoy the wildflowers, but do not pick them, as Sakar is a protected area and such activities are prohibited. On the other hand, if you set off along the route in late summer, you will find an abundance of blackberries that you can safely enjoy.

The isolated location of Sakar Mountain provides wide and beautiful views in all directions from its peaks. Thus, even at a modest altitude, this mountain offers a great sense of space and beauty.
