The Holy Trinity Monastery is situated on the hill above Ustrem village and is the largest monastery in Sakar. Founded in the 16th century, it is one of the few preserved monasteries in southern Bulgaria dating from the period of Ottoman rule.
According to local legend, monks fleeing the Ottoman authorities hid in the caves among the surrounding rocks. It was there that the monastic community began, later developing into the monastery. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it served as a refuge for voivodes and hajduks.
The place was an important spiritual centre for Bulgarians in the region, providing religious education and helping maintain the Christian faith. The monastery is still active today.
The Ustremska River flows past the monastery. The Karakolyova Dupka cave is located in the rocks above and can only be reached on foot.
The complex includes a church, a fountain and a courtyard with places to rest. There is also accommodation available in the monastery, with advance reservation.
