The protected area was designated in 2007 to conserve significant habitats of 149 bird species, 8 amphibian species, 21 reptile species and other protected, rare and vulnerable plant and animal species. The characteristic landscape of the Tundzha River Gorge includes broadleaved forests of oak, willow and poplar, as well as a mosaic of lichens, mosses and succulents.
The protected area lies along an important migration corridor and provides suitable habitats for many birds of prey. The territory also encompasses a dense network of deep gorges and pastures, while rocky formations occur along the river banks.
