Gorata is a low mountain ridge located in the easternmost part of the Eastern Rhodopes, between the Haskovo hilly region to the north and the Valche Pole basin to the south.
It is a little-known and less popular part of the Eastern Rhodopes, crossed by the international E8 route. Gorata offers remarkable views, rich biodiversity and interesting cultural layers. Its ridges have gentle forms and are covered with oak and mixed forests – home to the Lesser Spotted Eagle.
The most prominent peaks are Sveta Marina (708 m) and Sheynovets (703.6 m). Due to the transitional character of the ridge, located almost on the boundary between the Eastern Rhodopes and the Thracian Lowland, a variety of bird species nest here. The diverse mosaic of habitats, including forests, open hills, rocky terrain and river valleys, attracts both the common buzzard and the Levant sparrowhawk, as well as woodland species such as black woodpecker and Ortolan bunting. In Gorata you can also find European roller and grey partridge, birds of the open hills and pastures.
Traces of the Thracian era have been preserved in the Gorata Ridge – one of the largest sanctuaries, Gluhite Kamani, is located here, while numerous remains of tombs, rock niches and rock-cut wine presses can be found throughout the area.
With its combination of natural attractions, panoramic peaks and rich cultural and historical heritage, the Gorata Ridge is becoming an attractive destination for hiking enthusiasts who are also interested in the vast world of nature, history, local life and culture.
