Semerchetoto Rock Sanctuary

The Megalithic Culture of Sakar

It is situated on a natural rock formation shaped by the action of the Luda River on high rocky hills. The cult site covers an area of 2.5 decares. It was registered in 1993 by Prof. Totko Stoyanov. It was investigated through regular excavations over ten archaeological seasons. Structures and materials from the Late Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, Late Iron Age, Late Hellenistic and Roman periods have been discovered in the area.

Several large fire altars, about 1 metre in diameter and dating from the Late Bronze Age, have been documented. Large quantities of fragments of clay vessels, animal bones, bone and stone tools, and bronze beads were found around them. Of particular interest is a constructed altar in the shape of a double-sided battle or ceremonial axe.
