Paskalevi Kelemeta is the name of an area in the Sakar Mountains, derived from the local term for rock formations, including rocky ridges and cliffs. The word kelemeta in the local dialect means steep, hard-to-reach rocks or rocky crags, while Paskalevi comes from a personal or family name, probably that of a shepherd, landowner or local person associated with the place in the past.
Numerous megalithic monuments are scattered throughout this area and its surroundings – dolmens that served as tombs and sanctuaries thousands of years ago. The megalithic culture of the Balkans is associated with the Thracian era, and dolmens are the oldest known funerary architecture in the world. Some of them have been preserved in Bulgaria, including in the Sakar Mountains.
