Paleokastro Thracian Complex

A Pearl in the Megalithic Crown of Sakar Mountain

The remains of the Paleokastro rock sanctuary and fortress are located on the northern slopes of Sakar Mountain, between Topolovgrad and Hlyabovo village, about 3 km west of the town. The fortress was built on a naturally protected hill at an altitude of 430 m. From its summit, there is an outstanding view over the entire Thracian Plain, including the Monastery Heights, Bakadjika, Strandzha and the Balkan Mountains. The cult site served as a Thracian sanctuary dedicated to the Sun and is an archaeological site of national significance.
