Meraka Roadside Shelter

Looking for cosiness and art in one? Visit Meraka.

A resting place right beside the road from Topolovgrad to Vishegrad Peak, built with passion and an eye for aesthetic detail. You feel as though you have stepped into one of Baba Yaga’s fairy tales.

The shelter is named after Atanas Merakov, a local man from Topolovgrad who has put a great deal of effort into improving the area: he has planted trees himself and built gazebos and paths with the idea of creating a peaceful and pleasant place to rest and connect with nature.

Thanks to his initiative – and with the help of people inspired by his enthusiasm – the place has developed into a kind of “gateway” to Sakar, a shelter for travellers and nature lovers.

Maintaining and cleaning the shelter is the responsibility of everyone who uses it. The only thing missing is water – there is no fountain. A dirt road leads away from the shelter and follows the river from Mramor village.
