Bukelon Fortress

Guardian of the Tundzha Valley

Bukelon Fortress, also known as Matochina Fortress, rises on a high plateau near the border village of Matochina in the southeastern part of the Sakar Mountains, close to the Turkish border. It is one of the most interesting historical fortifications in Bulgaria, part of the ancient and medieval defensive system of the region.

Today, only the fortress's impressive 18-metre-high tower remains. It was built of stone and bricks and dates from the 12th–14th centuries. The tower majestically dominates the surrounding landscape and recalls the strategic importance of this place. In the past, Bukelon played an important role in Tsar Kaloyan's battle against the Crusaders led by Latin Emperor Baldwin I.
