In Elhovo\, the celebration comes alive in the central square\, where masquerade groups from across the region parade\, while in Ivaylovgrad the tradition is preserved by the local Kukeri group in the Ladzhata neighbourhood\, whose history dates back to 1914. The Kukeri wear richly decorated costumes and masks. They often take animal or fantastical forms and are adorned with feathers\, horns\, tassels\, pendants\, colourful threads and other decorations. Heavy bells and clappers ring from their belts. These noisy rituals have an ancient symbolism – through their loud sounds and frightening appearance\, the Kukeri are believed to drive away evil forces and spirits\, protect people and their homes during winter\, and bring health\, happiness and fertility to the community.\n\nIn Ivaylovgrad\, the Kukeri visit houses and courtyards\, scattering grain and reciting blessings for health and prosperity. They then gather in the square in Ladzhata\, where music\, dancing and a festive folk atmosphere bring participants and spectators together.
